Expressionary Events: Ask the Expert

Monday, January 13 2014

Every bride wants to make sure that her big day is absolutely perfect; but when faced with the enormity of choices regarding everything from the dress to the color of the napkins, especially when your following a new trend you love, it can be easy to lose sight of what exactly you want. We asked Carmen Fuentes of Expressionary Events three burning questions about what’s going on in the industry and how brides can make a trend uniquely theirs without sacrificing their personality. With over seven years in the wedding industry and a design philosophy that revolves around incorporating the couple’s personality and unique love story in every detail of the wedding, Expressionary Events is right on trend.

What's the next trend/creative concept?

A few years ago we saw brides cut back on décor in favor of DIY and simplicity, but not anymore. With the popularity of Twenties Glamour and Modern Opulence, a new resurgence in Hollywood Regency style is coming strong in wedding design. Hollywood Regency style originated in the golden age of Hollywood and is all about the glitz and glam of luxurious décor. You will also see couple’s incorporating sleek modern furniture, bold color, rich fabrics and textures to complete the look.  From the moment your guests arrive, they will immediately experience the wedding using the five senses and walk into a glamorous room of large crystal chandeliers and candelabras, be surrounded by bold and vivid florals, feel rich luxe fabrics, taste decadent selections, and delightful melodies.

How do you make a trend unique to each couple?

Once we decide on the couple’s wedding style for the foundation of their wedding, we then choose a few trends that they both love and incorporate them into the details. For example, vintage wedding trends are still going strong and many couples are including family heirlooms within their décor, giving a personal touch to their vintage wedding. Love and romance is timeless and remembering the loved ones that have passed have also taken a special place at weddings. Adding these photos of loved ones into the details tells their story and keeps the day particularly special.

What advice do you give brides who are determined to follow a trend? (For example, how do you incorporate DIY elements but still keep them glamorous?)

I always advise brides to choose their wedding style first before they start looking at trends. Your wedding style lays out the foundation for everything else - your venue, your decor, your details, and even your dress. Your style is the mood or feel you want to convey for your wedding (modern, classic, glamour, vintage, rustic, etc). After you determine your style you can then incorporate a wedding trend to help define your style. Trends and DIY elements like mason jars, crystals, using sparklers during the send off should be used to enhance the details to tell your story. Take a few trends you love, mash them up with your own personal wedding style, and you still have a lovely personalized wedding that’s on-trend and still uniquely you.
