Unlike seasonal runway fashion, which can change drastically from year to year, the shift in bridal gown styles is much more clearly defined across decades. In honor of Mon Amie's 40th Anniversary, we've rounded up some quintessential gowns, showing the evolution of bridal fasion over the last 60 years.

The 1950's ushered in Christian Dior's "New Look" featuring high necklines and full skirts, with fabrics and materials no longer rationed after WWII. One of the most popular wedding gowns of all time, worn by Princess Grace of Monaco (above), came out of this decade. It perfectly embodied what was happening in fashion at the time.

The beginning of the 1960's saw brides continuing to gravitate toward the fuller skirts of the 50s, but by the end of the decade, gowns had transitioned to what is now known as the "flower child look", featuring empire waists, bell sleeves and straighter skirts.

Brides kept this transition going into the 1970's. Bohemian styles (above) were extremely popular for brides. Around this time is also when bridal designers and bridal magazines began making their debut.

The 1980's (above) were big, just very very big! Brides couldn't get enough of everything. Trains, sleeves, veils, shoulders, pouf, beading the list goes on and on.

Brides in the 90's searched for a toned down version of the 80's. The early 90's featured fuller silhouettes but with a minimalist touch. This ultimately lead to a more fitted classic look at the end of the decade.

Brides opened the newest millennium with strapless ball gowns featuring pickups in the skirt (above).

By 2010, brides began seeking a more fitted look. The modern bride is asking for curve hugging gowns with long sleeves and low backs (above).
