Wedding Inspiration from the South of France to South America

We'll admit it, there's nothing we love more than beautiful, sumptuous linens. And once again, the trendsetting Southern California-based Luxe Linen got our hearts aflutter with their newest collection, a mix of vibrant patterns that range from boho to glam to subtle neutrals and vibrant patterns. Editor Lara Burnap and Publisher Thea Hargrove caught up with the three design teams who created tablescapes to showcase Luxe Linen's latest linens.

MEMENTO MORI by Kristeen LaBrot Events and Pixie's Petals (featuring Giana Moss Green Linen and Charcoal Metalis Weave, Black Shantung, and Eggplant Shantung Napkins)

What drew you to this linen?
I actually had the whole thing planned before I picked out the linen!
So tell me where your inspiration started?
My art history background was something I drew from- I always loved Memento Mori. It is 16th
century Dutch still life. So we brought this theme into the flowers and the whole tabletop with items
like the skull, hourglass and clock. The movement says, “We are all going to die, and we should enjoy
a beautiful life while we can.” It’s not supposed to be morbid, it’s supposed to be happy. There are
definitely death elements on the table, but it supposed to be happy. I went for a purple to contrast
the green, because purple was the color of royalty back then, also a nod to the Joker.

Talk me through the details of the table?
During this movement, there was a time that people started to show their wealth more. So we did a
little nod to that with the pearls and ornate flatware. I wanted the graphic design to be more modern,
to contrast with the vintage items. I’m obsessed with these chairs because they were called Infiniti
and they had to rename them as “Phoenix” because of a copyright. I was attracted to the name
“Infiniti” because it represented the afterlife-everything worked. The table also includes black
candles, candlesticks, medicinal bottles/ apothecary jars on the table from Etsy. The table is a
celebration of love and life.

Tell me about the flowers.
There is no color palette, the inspiration was Momento Mori and Dutch still life. So I looked at a lot of
photos, and I didn’t see a main color, but there were lavenders and bright oranges. I wanted to take
those colors and add pops of blue.

NUITS DES PAUME by Nicole Alexandra Designs & Art With Nature (featuring Giana Indigo Blue Linen)

Where did your inspiration come from? Honestly, it was from the linen itself. When I saw the indigo blue velvet, it reminded me of the south of France and then of a midnight blue. I wanted it to feel like a midnight blue, like if you have a great group of friends and it’s midnight in Paris in the south of France and you’re sitting down to this beautiful abundant table, and you have desserts, cheese, breads, wines and it’s a big party.

It’s all about picturing the experience of the guest. It’s true. I just felt like it was that ambiance. Like you’re sitting down, and it’s not necessarily like Marie Antoinette, because I didn’t want to take it in that direction. I wanted it more modern, with a really amazing Midnight feast with a lot of decadence and abundance. That was the inspiration.

The mixed medium of the furs, leathers, and chairs of the table changes the viewpoint of the table all together. That’s typically how I design. I always love to have a natural element that threads through instead of it being unnatural material. I love to design with natural elements and incorporating that into the design and making sure there is a balance.

It’s gorgeous. I just love this entire design. It all stems from this luxe and yummy linen. The color is so pretty and really everything stemmed from there. I worked with Kim from Art by Nature and she kept it organic and beautiful. Again, it’s not symmetrical but coordinated in the overall look. It definitely has dimension and diversity and I think that’s what makes it special and fun. A little Bohemian but still elegant.

MA QUE NADA (MORE THAN ANYTHING) by Jennifer Naylor Catering and Special Events & Brown Paper Design (featuring Cliff Dwelling Adobe Linen, Tan Burlap Napkins and Tribal Pillows)

Now, you are obviously coming from a very different place. You are bringing the experience of food
and beverage to your table, but also decor. Where did that start with you?

I was completely drawn to this linen called Cliff Dwelling in Adobe. I’ve spent some time in Oaxaca,
my team is from Oaxaca, and this linen definitely has this Aztec-Mexican vibe to it. Well, I’m from
Malibu, so I love wood, wrought iron, natural elements and an overall casual vibe. I went to school in
Dallas, so I know this designer who has all these wrought iron pieces. Yes, it absolutely influenced the
menu. I wanted to do Oaxacan mole and the tequila drink we called the “Malibu Paloma” made with
locally made Malibu honey.

Tell me about the vendors you used.
I loved exploring all of the catalogs and it all went from there. We meant Laura from Dish Wish and
she’s great. She had so many Aztec and cool plates to choose from. Brown Paper Design, who we
worked with before, have a very relaxed and natural aesthetic that works with what we do. We used a
farm table from A Rental Connection so that just works. Revelry had this mirror and we were just like
“Boom”- we had to have it!

What is the significance of your table name?
“Mas Que Nada” is the Sergio Mendes song and it means “More than anything.” It just seemed like
fun!
