The Power of Persistence: Sonja Babich Inspires Wine Country’s Wedding Community

The Iron Diamond Media owner joined ILEA Napa-Sonoma at Rodney Strong Vineyards for an honest conversation about persistence, leadership, wedding publishing and building a career with purpose.

Some events offer inspiration for an afternoon. Others leave guests thinking about the conversation long after the room has cleared. When Sonja Babich joined ILEA Napa-Sonoma for a speaking engagement at Rodney Strong Vineyards on September 9, her message did both.

Wedding and event professionals from across Napa and Sonoma wine country gathered to hear Babich share the story behind her career, from serving weddings at a family-owned golf club in Minnesota to becoming a leader in wedding media and publishing.

Her path was not presented as a perfectly polished climb. Instead, she spoke candidly about the jobs that shaped her, the risks she took, the unexpected challenges she faced and the relationships that helped move her forward.

The conversation offered an honest reminder that a meaningful career is rarely built in one defining moment. It is built by staying curious, caring about the people around you and continuing to show up.

Persistence Is More Than a Word

Babich shared that her word in life is “persistent,” a lesson she first heard from a college professor after repeatedly advocating for a place in an art class. That early experience became a theme throughout her career.

Persistence showed up when she returned to a hometown she had once been eager to leave and decided to make the most of the opportunity in front of her. She became president of the local chamber of commerce, helped start a convention and visitors bureau and continued expanding her role at a championship golf club.

It appeared again years later when she learned that the publishing position she had dreamed about was becoming available and reached out to the one connection she had.

Her story demonstrated that persistence is not always loud or dramatic. Often, it looks like sending the message, asking one more time, staying open to change and continuing to believe in the work even when the path becomes difficult.

Thomas “Tasche” Cryer II, founder of Vybe Society Entertainment, described the lesson this way:

“What resonated with me most from her talk was the power of having a clear intention. She knew what she wanted to create and, even when challenges stood in the way of making that vision a reality, she stayed committed to the dream. Her story reminded me that manifestation is not simply about believing something will happen. It is about having the courage, discipline and perseverance to keep moving forward when the path becomes difficult.”

Every Chapter Becomes Part of a Legacy

Long before entering publishing, Babich spent years doing the hands-on work of the wedding industry. She served weddings, sold weddings, developed ideas and ultimately helped plan hundreds of celebrations. She spoke proudly about increasing sales at the golf club by 80 percent, but the heart of that chapter was always the people. She still remembers her couples, their stories and what they taught her.

One of the most memorable ideas from her presentation was that every chapter of a career becomes part of a person’s legacy. It can be tempting to view an earlier job as merely a stepping stone to something bigger. Babich’s experience showed that the knowledge earned during those seasons is often exactly what prepares someone to lead later.

Her wedding-industry background also gave her a perspective that had been uncommon in publishing. She understood the long hours, emotional investment and business realities behind every beautiful image. She wanted to champion wedding professionals, hear their stories and help their work reach engaged couples. That genuine connection to the community became one of her greatest strengths.

Sheila Johnson, founder of Studio J Photography, shared:

“What inspired me most about Sonja was her genuine passion for the wedding industry and the professionals who make it so special. Because of her background and experience, she truly understands what wedding pros value and need from the publishing world. I also loved hearing her talk about the importance of persistence and being genuine, two qualities she believes are essential to building a successful career and values that resonate deeply with me as well. Her warmth, honesty and willingness to share her knowledge so openly were incredibly refreshing.”

Leadership Is About Who Comes With You

Babich’s career changed quickly after she entered publishing. She took on new responsibilities, learned an entirely different side of the wedding world and soon faced extraordinary uncertainty when the media company entered bankruptcy and the pandemic changed the industry almost overnight.

Rather than focusing only on protecting her own position, she learned everything she could about publishing, distribution, websites, social media and email marketing. She worked to generate the sales needed to bring her team back.

Her goal was not simply to survive a difficult season. She wanted her colleagues to have their careers and her clients to continue having platforms that supported them.

It was one of the clearest leadership lessons of the afternoon. Leadership means taking responsibility, staying open to learning and recognizing that success matters more when other people are able to move forward too.

A Takeaway from Samar Hazelwood

For Samar Hazelwood, founder of Blissful Events and one of the organizers and speaker liaison hosts for the program, Babich’s willingness to leave the safety of what she already knew was especially meaningful.

“Sonja reminded me that growth often begins before we feel completely ready. You can be proud of what you have built and still have the courage to begin a new chapter. Persistence, genuine relationships and a willingness to keep learning are what turn an opportunity into something meaningful.”

The message felt especially relevant for wedding and event professionals, who devote so much energy to creating meaningful experiences for others. Babich encouraged the room to bring that same intention to their own careers: know what you want to create, nurture your community, remain genuine, ask for the opportunity and stay persistent when the path changes.

A Wine Country Community Effort

Bringing the September 9 program to life was a true collaboration. Hazelwood helped spearhead the event and welcome Babich to wine country. She was joined in organizing the program and serving as a speaker liaison host by Sheila Johnson, founder of Studio J Photography, and Catherine and Tasche Cryer II of Vybe Society.

Together, they helped create an experience that felt thoughtful, welcoming and connected to the spirit of the Napa and Sonoma wedding community.

Babich’s visit offered practical insight into wedding publishing, but its greatest impact may have been more personal. It renewed the room’s belief in the value of persistence, authentic leadership and a strong professional community.

And if The Bev Cart Girl ever becomes the book Babich predicts it will be, there will likely be an enthusiastic group of Napa and Sonoma wedding professionals first in line for a copy. —Samar Hazelwood
