Ventura County–based wedding planner Jane Gerwin of Jane Alexandra Events (janealexandraevents.com) and photographer Katrina Jayne (katrinajayne.com) sought to modernize one of California’s ever-present muses, the ocean. With shades of blue as the base, the design took a new shape with the addition of geometric details, mixed metals and translucent touches. Pacific Palisades’ Bel-Air Bay Club provided the perfect setting for Gerwin and Jayne to create their vision. “When it comes to a vast backdrop like the ocean, less is more, so it was important to have a minimalistic design approach,” explains Gerwin. “The translucent theme let the ocean be the centerpiece while enabling us to add a modern, distinct flair.” Details like the acrylic ceremony backdrop and ghost chairs allow the ocean to shimmer in the background. The rich color palette of blue, gray and metallic golds pay homage to the Pacific and results in a modern and timeless statement.

A translucent backdrop doubles as a ceremony space and free-standing art piece. Crafted from copper pipes with an acrylic backdrop, it features the phrase “My love for you is deeper than the Ocean,” calligraphed by Westlake Village’s Kelly Patrice (kellypatrice.com). XO Bloom finished the look with a garland of blue and white thistle, dusty miller and dahlias. Ghost chairs from MTB Rentals in Glendale (mtbeventrentals.com) add a minimalist touch.
